Husband and wife should not operate a joint account.
Over the years, many questions have been asked on this salient issue. Should couples keep joint accounts?
Religious people will come up with the reason why it helps to maintain openness and trust in marriages, others
will say it helps couples to monitor each other’s spending and also helps them finance joint projects.
I used to be an ardent believer in joint account before marriage because I am open with my finances to a
fault. I believe what I have belongs to my husband and vice versa. But my husband has contrary opinion. His
belief is to give you what he has to give you while he maintains his“privacy”.
Clear understanding I got from that and I don’t have to be accountable to him on the way I spend my
money. Although I still sometimes seek his consent before I make my purchases. Here is my take what works
for me may not work for you. You may decide to operate a joint account and it could work out or flop. I have read
so many pathetic true life stories on social media where men have disposed their wives of their earnings
because of joint account.
A particular story that touched me is a lady who earns more than her husband but went into joint account
to make her hubby happy. Hubby will send money to his own parent, build house for his own parents from his
wife hard earned money. But whenever the woman suggested they send money to her parent for food, trouble
shoots. Okay, here is my take. Are you stupid that you cannot go to your employer to change your account
details? So you could take care of your own parents?
After the man had sucked her like orange he trashed her. Then what is the essence of a joint account when it
cannot join the two of you together for life. A relationship that will survive will with or without co-banking. You
don’t have to depend on monitoring your spouse’s expenses to know they love you .The bible says the love of
money is the root of all evil. When a wife knows that there is plenty money she can decide to kill her husband and
take over the whole lot and vice versa or don’t you think it can happen?
Apply wisdom – keeping separate account doesn’t stop you as a wife from contributing financially to the
development of your home. What you must do is to apply wisdom to balance our affairs and money. The fact
that your woman is a not operating a joint account with you does not stop you from being responsible as a man.
You must still take care of her after all you are the husband. Both of you can still finance your projects and be
successful in doing so.
I’ve heard bitter stories of women who operated joint account with their hubby and did everything together under
Mr and Mrs but at the demise of the man, the family took everything the couple worked for sending the woman
out empty handed with the children. Wicked you’ll say. What about a man who took the wife’s property
because of trust. They did everything under Mr. And Mrs his name, the land, cars and all they worked together
for. He got married to another woman and when the first wife took the case to court, she lost gallantly because
the new wife is also Mrs his name.
In conclusion, whatever system that works for you and your spouse should be what you should adopt.
Don’t say because this worked for my parent or Mr. and Mrs. A, my neighbor you want to follow suit. Stay on your
lane and apply wisdom. Wisdom will teach you if you are to do joint or separate account. Enjoy your marriage
with or without a joint account.
